The Smigelski Family | 75 Years Grown | Agawam, Massachusetts

For me being in this career is so much more than just taking photos. I get to meet so many different people and learn all about their lives, which mould me as an individual. This family was certainly one I won’t soon forget.

When my friend Karen contacted me and said her family was interested in doing a 75th anniversary shoot for her family I was excited! I had never had the good fortune to photograph a couple who had been together so long! When I met the Smigelskis, it was as if I had known them forever. The reminded me so much of my own grandparents who has passed over 20 years ago. I still remember then as if they were here. The sound of their voices, their warm comforting hugs, the way they would always give vegetables grown in their garden to everyone, and make sure you never left their home without a full belly. Being with this family brought up so many memories that were filed in the back of my mind, forcing me to think about what it would be like if they were still here. After their shoot I drove home in tears with a grateful heart that I was able to document this beautiful couple and milestone in their marriage.

Mr + Mrs Smigelski are quick witted, and still have spunk in their step. This sweet couple have a beautiful home, and extensive gardens they have tended to their entire lives. They took me around showing me all the vegetables they had grown, and a tour of their home. They even sent me home with tomatoes and peppers! Karen’s mother took me into her childhood bedroom and reminisced getting ready at her makeup table, and all the memories the walls hold. We took varied portraits of all the families that have formed as a result of these two. (Which are not included in this post) I chose instead to focus on the overall group and this inspiring couple – because when you’ve been married that long – its all about you!
